Justification and Impact
  • Rationale (check all that apply)*
  • Provide a brief summary and rationale for proposed changes*

Following the addition of the MS in Computer Science, we experienced a significant drop in the number of students in our graduate mathematics programs since many students attending our program completed a MA/MS in Mathematics with a Concentration in Computer Science.  As we have been gradually increasing the number of students in our graduate programs in mathematics, it became increasingly obvious that we needed to streamline and update the curriculum.  In addition, with the loss if mathematics faculty, we are unable to offer the required courses on a yearly basis.

The proposed curriculum, a core of eight courses, from which students are required to select four will offer flexibility to students and we have the capacity to offer each of these core courses on a two-year rotating basis.  Four of the courses are considered pure mathematics and four are considered applied mathematics.  We have created a rotation so that each semester one of the “pure” courses and one of the “applied” courses will be offered.  Students will then fill out the remaining 5-6 courses of electives with either additional courses from the core or other 5/600 level courses.  MS students will take 6 electives (18 credits) and complete a culminating project for 3 credits.  MA students will take 5 electives (15 credits) and complete a thesis for 6 credits.

  • What steps have you taken to notify affected faculty/ departments?
