  • Course Description

Using a project based approach, students will learn to identify disparities among various group members within a given community and develop action oriented solutions to help reduce or eliminate such disparities. Students will develop the skills to search for ways they can emphasize and address the role that inequality plays in the areas of education. They will recognize and reflect on the strengths and limitations of different research methodologies, understand the links between theory and practice, critically assess research, and address ethical and practical issues. The course takes a step-by-step approach infusing the philosophy of social justice beginning with the design process to the selection and interpretation of data. Students will learn to manage and analyze archival data, and how to write up and present those findings. Students will be equipped with the knowledge and ability to undertake original research projects and develop a set of transferable workplace skills. The completion of this course will provide students with the skills to review and conduct methodologically sound research as a part of their professional work and also promote advocacy for social justice.

Limit course description to 50 words.
  • Catalog Notes

The aim of this course is to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the role and impact that educational research play in the pursuit of social justice using a project based approach. This course will provide an opportunity for students to advance their understanding of research through the critical exploration of an at risk student population (such as students of color, females in STEM, students with disabilities). The course introduces the language of research, ethical principles, and social justice principles. Students will explore how to infuse social justice principles into the research process as well as determine how research findings are useful in developing real world solutions to problems of inequality within our educational systems.

Include notes that belong in the catalog (i.e., Open to graduate students, lab hours required)

  • Justification and Impact
  • What is the rationale for this course?*

Justification for HIP category: This course will provide an opportunity for all undergraduate students to participate in research but especially students of color. This high impact course will examine the principles of social justice throughout the research process. Social justice is a topic of interest for many students of color (Brown, 2017). The hope is that students’ interest in social justice will intersect with the opportunity to conduct their own research and develop real world solutions for problems that may impact their communities. Research suggest "that HIP participation supports student performance and success, with historically underserved students often benefitting more than their peers" (Kinzie, 2012).
