Approved by University College Council, 9-10-2020 Vote: 16-0-0

1). The revision of the UDIE category, and

2).  The creation of a new category, High-Impact Practices

    Revision to the UDIE Category

The proposed revisions to the UDIE category are as follows:

    • reduce the UDIE category to one UDIE course.
    • Nullify waivers to the second course. The block waiver for the Honors Program would remain in place (see Policies).
    • Change the prerequisite for the UDIE course to “completion of junior composition requirement.” This prerequisite assumes students will have completed the junior composition course, reached 60 credit hours, completed a majority of their FS category courses, and will be prepared to apply the multiple ways of knowing required in the UDIE course. Previous assessment of student work in the UDIE category shows that students are not generally writing at the level we would expect for a capstone course. Ensuring that students are well prepared to develop their writing further in the UDIE course is the first step in addressing concerns revealed through assessment.

    Argument for new HIP category

ISU has built part of its reputation on experiential learning, student engagement, and career readiness experiences. It now has the capacity to offer such experiences to all students. The proposal revisits the Upper Division Integrative Elective and expands upon the possibilities of its original design to provide every undergraduate student at ISU access to the power of High Impact Practice experiences. The new HIP category would offer high-impact practices in the area of undergraduate research, service learning, community engagement, clinicals, practica, internships, and study abroad experiences for all students.

AAC&U, whose philosophies form the basis of the current Foundational Studies Program, identifies many practices that have verifiably high impact on student success.[1] The incorporation of HIPs in higher education has more than a decade of experience and data to show their effectiveness (Kuh and Kinzie, 2018). HIPs, well done, impact every student positively, but they also have demonstrable positive impact on traditionally underserved populations (Finley and McNair, 2013). It is time that we ensure that every student at ISU has access to these powerful experiences.

The current UDIE category, which requires two UDIE courses, reveals options that were adopted for reasons of exigency: students who were able to add programmatic layers beyond the major were receiving, in a sense, credit relief, while other students were unable to take advantage of these opportunities. However, were not a feature of an integrated and assessable academic program. The proposal would eliminate “waiving” a requirement by recognizing and integrating into the Foundational Studies Program already existing and new opportunities for students to complete research, service and community-based learning, internships and study abroad that are often already part of students’ programs.

Bringing existing and potentially new experiences into the Foundational Studies Program through the new HIP category creates culminating experiences for all students that highlight the strengths of both the specific discipline and the Foundational Studies Program with its alignment to AAC&U principles.

Credit hours.  The proposal does not set a credit hour requirement for the HIP category. Departments will submit courses for approval to the array; they will not be required to conform to specific credit

hours. This will allow maximum flexibility for an array of experiences that may be proposed. All internship and practical experiences must be in compliance with University policy (following the ISU Internship Handbook).

Courses.  Courses already exist for many of the options, including courses in the major that were developed to meet culminating experience requirements. Courses in other Foundational Studies categories may be more appropriate for the HIP category. Faculty will also be encouraged to develop new courses.

ORR Review (to be completed by registrar)
  • Degree Audit Considerations

Currently there is not an efficient means to manage the enforcement of the completion of Jr Comp as a pre-req to the UDIE FS requirement to prevent registration. ORR would suggest listing Jr Comp prereq as part of the requirements within the audit (similar to freshman comp/jr comp in the audit now), however this would not prevent registration and would rely on advisor guidance. Future features within the degree audit system (pre-req checking) may make this type of request easier to manage/enforce.

All waivers previously assiged to the UDIE category are requested to be removed with the exception of the Honors College Curriculum.

If proposed changes to UDIE/HIP are approved, all active program articulations with AAS degrees will need revised by the respective departments based on the proposed elimination of the UDIE waiver for completion of AAS degree.

March 2022 - Confirmed with UCC that all priors waivers of UDIE will be removed with the exception of completion of Honors College Curriuculum. HIIP category will only allow waiver from Honors College Curriculum completion and AAS degree.
